B Com Financial Planning
|
| The Department of Business
Management developed a B Com degree in Financial Planning
after having identified a dire need for it in the South
African marketplace. NMMU, in co-operation with the Financial
Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI), is the first
academic institution in the country to offer this degree.
The key contributor to this project was Sanlam Financial
Services. |

The Small Business Unit |
| The Small Business Development
Initiative at NMMU is sponsored by Absa. The bank funds
selected small business projects in terms of training in
entrepreneurship skills (i.e. business plan development
and financial management), vocational skills training, mentoring
and aftercare, initial capital costs and all initiatives
that are geared at creating sustainable business and jobs
for previously unemployed people. Projects that show real
success include the Itekeng Self-help Project, which benefits
people with disabilities. This project is involved in the
making of vaseline, candles, polish and in sewing and employs
22 people.
Through their vehicle support programme GM South Africa
donated a vehicle to the NMMU Small Business Unit for
its Vulindlela project. Through this project, the NMMU
assists various municipalities in the Small Medium and
Micro Enterprise development, Business Development Services,
Entrepreneurial Development and job creation initiatives.

Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning |
| A Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning at the NMMU Department of Business Management has been approved by the Department of Education. This will create an articulation path for B Com Financial Planning graduates as well as graduates from other related disciplines such as Accounting and Law. The Postgraduate Diploma qualification will be the highest professional qualification in this field available in South Africa and will contribute to the professional competency of financial planners, which will consequently make them eligible for professional membership of the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa and for accreditation as Certified Financial Planners. The CFP professional designation is internationally recognised as the pinnacle of educational achievement in financial planning. The NMMU Trust funded this project, specifically the development of study material and the initial employment of part time lecturers. |
