Collaboration: Department of Language and Literature and the Department of Journalism, Media and Philosophy

The French subject group within the NMMU, with the support and investment of the French Embassy of South Africa, has embarked upon a project to integrate its curriculum within the BA Media, Communication and Culture Programme in the Department of Journalism, Media and Philosophy at NMMU. The result of this repositioning is an innovative learning project that integrates real-world practical experience with linguistic practice and assessment of the core linguistic capabilities: comprehension, reading, writing and speaking. The project ultimately will result in the publication of an online newspaper in French and English.

The publication Sharp!, started in 2008, offers the space for local and regional artists to showcase their work. This publication is a hands-on teaching experience for students in both schools who are actively involved in editing, design and layout, and PR events management. It is also well subscribed to by published artists and has included the work of Mzi Mahola. The result of this collaborative venture, which includes outreach into the local community, is an innovative learning project that integrates real-world practical experience with language and literary excellence, celebrating a multicultural approach to art. The NMMU Trust is co-sponsor of this project.
