Thuthuka Project

NMMU accountancy graduates were among the most successful in the country with 87% of first-time candidates passing the 2007 Public Practice Examination (PPE) set by the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors. This is above the national pass rate of 81% for first attempts. Investec contributed towards this project, which is aimed at disadvantaged accounting students at NMMU. The Thuthuka programme at NMMU is particularly successful due to the quality of the interventions provided to support Thuthuka students with their studies (for example - dedicated lecturers in Accounting 1 and 2, and study sessions in the evenings facilitated by subject experts). While the students on this programme are from disadvantaged backgrounds, their performances often far exceed those of students on the mainstream.

Hands up who wants a second chance!

The Milde McWilliams Trust funds student bursaries for students who fail their BCom Honours (Accounting) degree at first attempt, but who obtained an average final mark of at least 40% for their studies. These students have been particularly successful when repeating the year, and with the aid of the Milde McWilliams Trust, these students are now given a second chance at success.

Prof Frans Prinsloo comments, "Due to the BCom Honours (Accounting) programme being extremely challenging, many students need two years to be successful. Of the sixteen students who obtained an average final mark of greater than 40% in 2007 and who repeated the Honours programme at NMMU in 2008, 81% passed on the second attempt. These repeat students then also all passed the notoriously difficult Qualifying Examination Part 1 of the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants on their first attempt. This achievement was recognised by the Trustees of the Milde McWilliams Trust, who generously agreed to provide bursaries for deserving repeat Honours students with effect from 2009.
