Campus Health Service Community Project
|
| The Eastern Cape experienced
severe floods in 2006 that left many people homeless and
without clothing. The Foshini Group contacted the NMMU
Campus Health Service via the office of the Trust and
offered a donation of clothing, shoes, and handbags etc
that could be distributed to people left destitute by
the floods. Subsequently, the Campus Health service received
109 boxes of clothing and accessories from the Foshini
Group, which were then distributed to the Mother of Hope
Crisis Centre, the Maranatha Street Children’s Trust,
Reach PE, The PE Red Cross, the Sinethemba children’s
Shelter, the CMSR in George and two schools in Port Elizabeth.
The odd sizes were donated to the local provincial hospital
so that people with prosthesis could use them. |

Educare Toy Library in Ukukhanya Pre
School in Zwide |
| The HIV and AIDS Unit, aware
that most preprimary children do not have many play areas
or toys, which they need for normal growth and development,
decided to provide these children with access to a collection
of toys, games, puzzles and educational aids, in order
to facilitate school readiness. This was achieved by developing
a sustainable toy library project in Zwide. The project
has received funding from Vodacom. |

Foschini Support
|
This kind of project always
brings light to the lives of little ones. They will
thus always be the main beneficiaries in our projects
and especially the Foschini donation.
We tend to think a soup kitchen only provides food,
however this is not the case at Jenny’s soup kitchen.
She takes care of the people from various informal
settlements and often needs to provide clothes,
blankets and other items when the shacks burn
down or are flooded in the rains.
Children will always be at the forefront of any
community project as they are the ones that suffer the
most. This donation of clothing and accessories from
Foschini made it possible to further support the children’s
homes because such a large number of sporting items were
received. They were well received by the children and
the fact that it was close to Christmas made it even more
special. The soccer balls were put to work straight away
as the children could not wait to play and practise their
skills in order to become future Bafana Bafana players.
A large number of the clothing received from Foshini
in 2006 was suitable for the more mature woman.
Many old age homes across the racial groups were supported.
The senior citizens commented that it was wonderful to
know that they were still in the thoughts of others
as they often feel they are just a burden. |
