Which projects are
being funded by the NMMU Trust?
Executive Director of the NMMU Trust Prof Kotie Grové
says, “If a project proposal falls within the priorities
of both the university and outside funders including the
corporate world, foundations and industry, the Trust office
will set up meetings with the relevant persons to discuss
the possibility for financial assistance. In many cases
the project leaders are also incorporated in the final
discussions with outside funders. A variety of academic
(both undergraduate and postgraduate levels), research,
bursaries, sport and community projects qualify for funding.
The Trust can never promise that a particular proposal
will be successful but will do its best to obtain funding.
We don’t want to kill individual initiatives, but
we firmly believe that a coordinated approach is the only
one that will be successful in the long run.”
Which process is followed with proposals for
funding?
All projects requiring funding should be channelled
through the Trust office to coordinate approaches to
the funders. Funders also request that they only deal
with the Trust office and not with individual persons
or departments. Twice a year in the first and second
semester proposals are identified and screened by a
committee. The successful proposals are then screened
by the Executive Committee of Management and then by
the NMMU Trust for final consideration. These identified
proposals are also submitted to outside funders because
corporates make commitments easier when they already
see the commitment of the university. Whether successful
or not for funding by the Trust proposals are also submitted
to the outside world.
What about smaller sponsorships for student activities?
Any sponsorships are channelled through the Trust office
– the contact person is Ria du Toit on the 13th
floor of the Main Building on the South campus.
