The Walmer Multidisciplinary Project
- The Sky is the Limit |
| Three Walmer township schools
gained a host of wellness-orientated services from different
departments within the university and the university gained
practical hands-on experience for its students, as well
as valuable research opportunities, through this project.
This project focuses on self-efficacy issues, conflict
resolution and transformation management in the classroom,
youth resilience and IT training - areas that centre on
the particular vulnerabilities of teachers and students
in disadvantaged contexts. |

Motherwell - Reaching Out To Make A Difference
|
| The Research Technology and Innovation
Unit of the Faculty of Education at NMMU has been working
with teachers from various schools in the Motherwell area
for the past two years. During the first phase the focus
was on self-efficacy improvement. The second phase completed
in 2006, enabled teachers to become involved in their
communities to make a difference. This was achieved using
participatory visual methodology called photo voice. This
form of research uses visual images to facilitate change.
The teachers took photographs in their community and wrote
narratives on them, which were then exhibited. This project
was supported with funds from the Albert Wessels Trust.

The Walmer Multidisciplinary Project
- The NMMU Trust continues to support this multidisciplinary project |
The tier on Youth Resilience started
in 2007 with peer mentoring training for grade 10 – 12 learners at Walmer High.
The Photo Voice Project saw teachers present an event at their respective
schools to take the message of their photographs to their colleagues.
Thereafter, they planned and presented a combined event to introduce
the project and photographs to the wider school communities.
They have also worked together to produce a newsletter aimed at
involving parents more in the school activities.
The teachers at Walmer High, Walmer Primary and John Masisa
Primary are enthusiastic about this project and it appears
that it is helping to raise awareness about the importance
of using education to combat the negative impact of poverty. |
