House of Resurrection AIDS Haven Hearts & Hands event in Port Elizabeth

Third year BA (Media, Culture and Communications) students from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) hosted the House of Resurrection AIDS Haven Hearts & Hands event in Port Elizabeth - an afternoon to acknowledge and show appreciation to the dedicated staff and volunteers of The House of Resurrection AIDS Haven.

The Haven is home to adults, children and babies who are either HIV Positive, have AIDS or have been orphaned by the disease. The Haven is also a 24-hour Care Centre providing community outreaches and training programs. The Victoria Park High School Jazz Band opened proceedings and the NMMU Choir sang at the event before the Matron of the Haven, Agnes Bouwer, said a few words of appreciation.

Olivia Raper says, "As third year students, we were given the project to do PR for the House of Resurrection AIDS Haven. This not only counts towards our marks, but it also helps us to gain valuable experience for the world of work next year. As one of the values of the NMMU is to engage in communities, we feel that this event met with those expectations."

Renita Affat of the NMMU Trust said that the Trust had donated money towards the hosting of the event because they were proud the role these NMMU students were fulfilling in disadvantaged communities in Port Elizabeth and supported their community engagement initiatives.
